“The canal will remain under Panamanian control": Panamanian President José Mulino reacted sharply to Trump's promise at the inauguration. During the inauguration ceremony, the new US leader said he would bring the canal, which had been ‘foolishly’ handed over to Panama, back under US control. “On behalf of the Panamanian people, I must completely reject the statements made by US President Donald Trump about the Panama Canal in his inaugural address. I repeat: the canal is and will remain under the control of Panama and its administration,” the Panamanian president responded immediately.
